How to measure a ring you already own
A difference of less than one millimetre can change the fit noticeably. Measure at the end of the day when fingers are usually at their normal or slightly larger size, but not immediately after exercise or in extreme heat.
- Choose a ring that fits the same finger on which you will wear the new ring.
- Place it on a ruler and measure the widest inside distance, edge to edge, in millimetres.
- Do not include the metal of the ring in the measurement.
- Compare that inner diameter with the chart below and confirm against the seller's chart before ordering.

Measuring a finger without a ring
Wrap a narrow strip of non-stretch paper around the base of the finger. Mark where the ends meet, lay the paper flat and measure the marked length in millimetres. That number is the approximate finger circumference. The strip should be snug but able to pass over the knuckle.
String stretches and compresses, so paper is usually more reliable. Repeat the measurement three times. If the knuckle is much wider than the base of the finger, choose a size between the two measurements or ask the seller about fit.
Common necklace lengths
The same chain sits differently depending on neck circumference, height and pendant weight. To preview the drop, cut a piece of string to the listed chain length, join the ends and place it around your neck in front of a mirror.

How to measure for a bracelet
Wrap a flexible measuring tape around the wrist just below the wrist bone. For a close fit, add about 0.5–1 cm; for a comfortable fit, add 1–1.5 cm; for a loose fit, add roughly 1.5–2 cm. Chunky bracelets may need more room than fine chains.
For a closed bangle, wrist circumference is not enough. Touch the thumb to the little finger, measure around the widest part of the compressed hand and compare that measurement with the bangle's internal circumference or diameter.
Check scale as well as size
For earrings and pendants, read both height and width. A close-up product photograph can make a small piece appear much larger. Compare its millimetre dimensions with a ruler, or look for a model photograph that shows the piece at human scale.
Before checkout, check chain length, extension length, pendant dimensions, earring drop, fastening type and weight. These measurements tell you more about comfort and proportion than a style name alone.
