AURNELIA JEWELLERY GUIDE
How to Care for Anti-Tarnish Jewellery in Indian Weather
Heat, sweat, humidity and monsoon moisture make India a demanding environment for jewellery. Anti-tarnish finishes slow discolouration, but good daily habits still determine how long a piece keeps its colour and shine. This guide gives you a simple routine that works without specialist products.

What anti-tarnish actually means
Anti-tarnish does not mean that a finish can never change. It means the jewellery has been made or coated to resist the chemical reactions and surface wear that cause dullness and discolouration. The result also depends on the base metal, plating thickness, protective coating and how the piece is worn.
Sweat, perfume, moisturiser, chlorine, salt and household cleaners can all shorten the life of a plated finish. A water-resistant piece can handle occasional contact with clean water, but repeated wetting and chemical exposure still create wear.
The two-minute routine after wearing
This quick wipe removes sweat, skin oil and cosmetic residue before they sit on the finish overnight. Do not polish aggressively: friction can wear plating faster than normal use.
- Remove jewellery before changing clothes so chains, clasps and stones do not snag.
- Wipe every surface gently with a clean, soft and dry microfibre cloth.
- If the piece feels damp, leave it in open air until it is completely dry.
- Store pieces separately instead of dropping them together into a jewellery dish.
Care during summer and monsoon
In hot weather, take off close-fitting pieces after heavy sweating and dry both the jewellery and your skin. During monsoon, do not seal a damp piece inside a pouch. Let it dry first, then place it in a dry box away from bathroom humidity and direct sunlight.
A small silica-gel packet can help keep a jewellery box dry, but it must never replace drying the jewellery itself. Replace the packet when it is saturated, and keep it away from children and pets.
How to clean it safely
For routine cleaning, a dry microfibre cloth is enough. If the care information supplied with the piece permits washing, use lukewarm water and a tiny amount of mild, fragrance-free soap. Clean briefly with your fingertips, rinse with clean water, pat dry and allow the piece to air-dry fully before storage.
Avoid toothpaste, baking soda, lemon, vinegar, bleach, silver dip, rough brushes and abrasive polishing cloths. These can scratch a coating, loosen adhesive or remove plating. Pearls, soft stones and glued settings should not be soaked; wipe them carefully instead.
Store each piece separately
- Fasten necklaces before storing them to reduce tangling.
- Keep chains flat or hang them with enough space between pieces.
- Place earrings in separate compartments so posts do not scratch other jewellery.
- Use a soft pouch or lined box in a cool, dry cupboard.
- Do not store jewellery permanently in a bathroom, car or sunny windowsill.
A sensible order for getting ready
Apply skincare, sunscreen, perfume and hairspray first. Wait until they are dry, then put on jewellery as the final step. At the end of the day, remove jewellery first. This limits direct contact with alcohol, fragrance oils and sprays while also preventing accidental pulling.
When to stop wearing a damaged piece
Stop wearing a piece if a stone becomes loose, a clasp no longer closes securely, an earring post bends or a sharp edge appears. Continued use can turn a small repair into a lost stone or broken chain. Surface colour change is usually cosmetic, but exposed or rough metal should be inspected before the piece is worn again.

Frequently asked questions
Can I shower while wearing anti-tarnish jewellery?
Check the maker's care instructions. Water-resistant is not the same as waterproof, and soap, shampoo and repeated wetting can shorten the life of plating even when an occasional splash is harmless.
Can perfume tarnish jewellery?
Perfume contains alcohol, fragrance oils and other ingredients that may attack coatings or leave residue. Apply it before putting on jewellery and let it dry first.
Should anti-tarnish jewellery be kept in an airtight bag?
A clean, dry pouch or closed box helps, but never seal jewellery while it is damp. Separate storage is more important than squeezing multiple pieces into one bag.
